How the numbers are worked out

  • Inflation. Your desired income is grown at 2.5% a year until your retirement age. That is close to Singapore's long run core inflation average, not a worst case figure.
  • CPF LIFE. A flat $1,650 a month from age 65, roughly the Standard Plan payout for someone who reaches the Full Retirement Sum. Switch it off to see the picture without CPF.
  • Your shortfall. Inflation adjusted income minus the CPF LIFE estimate.
  • Capital needed. Shortfall times 12, divided by 4%. The 4% withdrawal rule is a common planning benchmark, not a guarantee.
  • Monthly savings. What you would set aside each month at an assumed 4% a year to reach that capital by your retirement age.

These are estimates for education. Your real numbers depend on your CPF balances, existing assets and returns.
